Chen Zhinan and I met in college. We were in the same club—I was the president, and he was the vice president.
Back then, we planned events together, often staying up late. Chen Zhinan was so thoughtful—he’d prepare late-night snacks for me, afraid I’d be hungry, and even give me chocolate.
Once, we came back late and ran into some hooligans. Chen Zhinan wasn’t very strong, but facing so many people, he still stood in front of me and told me not to be afraid.
That day, he was beaten black and blue. Fortunately, the police arrived just in time, and no one was killed.
Back then, I thought he was reliable.
After college, I turned down the marriage my parents arranged for me. Despite their objections—even nearly disowning me—I married Chen Zhinan.
Chen Zhinan and I worked day and night to run our company. My mom saw how much weight I’d lost, and finally, my dad used his connections to help us establish ourselves in the capital.
But Chen Zhinan cheated on me.
I checked his purchase records and was shocked to find he’d bought all my gifts in duplicates.
All those past sweet words were just a joke.
That night, Chen Zhinan came home earlier. When I got back, he’d already cooked dinner.
He said, “Today’s your birthday. I wanted to give you a surprise.”
I was a little touched—I’d almost forgotten my own birthday.
He gave me a necklace.
Suddenly, I remembered he’d bought two of these necklaces too.
I forced a smile and said, “It’s beautiful.”
He made my favorite steak—his cooking was always good, tender and delicious.
After a while, he answered a phone call and stepped outside. When he came back, he said, “Something came up at the company. I need to go.”
I asked, “What’s so urgent?”
He said, “A problem with a client.”
“Go then.”
But I’d clearly heard Qiao Lu’s voice on the phone.
I drove behind Chen Zhinan and followed him to a bridge. There, I saw Qiao Lu sitting on the ground, crying in Chen Zhinan’s arms.
I walked over. Chen Zhinan was arguing with a driver.
The driver said, “I didn’t hit her! She threw herself at my car!”
Qiao Lu held back her tears and said, “It’s my fault. I wasn’t paying attention.”
Chen Zhinan hugged her tightly and comforted her, “It’s okay. It’s not your fault.”
I looked at the small cut on Qiao Lu’s foot and sneered, “If you don’t go to the hospital soon, that cut will heal on its own.”
Chen Zhinan saw me and quickly let go of Qiao Lu. “Why are you here?”
I said, “To watch you play the hero saving the damsel in distress.”
The driver said, “Can I leave now?”
I said, “Go.”
I turned to Chen Zhinan and said, “Come with me now, and we can still make this work. Otherwise, let’s get a divorce.”
Chen Zhinan followed me to the car. But Qiao Lu grabbed his shirt and cried, “Zhinan哥, it hurts so much! Don’t leave me!”
Chen Zhinan said, “Be good. I already called an ambulance. It’ll be here soon.”
Qiao Lu begged, “Zhinan哥, don’t go! Please!”
Chen Zhinan got in the car. I drove slowly, and Qiao Lu ran after us. Chen Zhinan watched her in the rearview mirror, rubbing his hands nervously—his subconscious gesture when he was anxious.
Qiao Lu tripped and fell. Chen Zhinan told me to stop. He hurried out of the car, even forgetting to close the door.
