There was a minor issue with the experiment results, and Lin Yuchuan had been away for a week too. The Lin Group held a press conference to announce a breakthrough in their new medical research.
I was invited to attend. Backstage, I saw Lin Yuchuan. I was about to step forward to ask why he was there when I heard him talking to someone beside him:
"I only got close to Zhu Zhu for her experiment results."
"Honestly, female PhDs are just so-so."
My footsteps froze.
Watching him hold a glass of red wine with a nonchalant look, I heard even more hurtful words from his mouth:
"They’re all the same in bed."
A burst of sneers erupted from the group of well-dressed young masters around him.
"Only Young Master Lin has such a clever way—taking an unconventional approach."
Lin Yuchuan revelled in the flattery and continued:
"Her ex-boyfriend wasn’t any good either; he also approached her for money."
"When I first met her, she clearly wasn’t a virgin anymore, yet she acted like a chaste maiden."
"She even used me as a substitute. Taking her research results is just interest for me."
"If her research topic weren’t so crucial to the Lin Group, I wouldn’t have bothered putting on this affectionate act for an orphaned four-eyed geek every day."
Someone joked around him: "Young Master Lin, you’ve been with Miss Zhu for three years—isn’t that like biding your time through hardships?"
" The research is almost done. Congratulations, Young Master Lin."
Lin Yuchuan swirled the wine in his glass and said slowly:
"Getting her research results isn’t enough. The Lin Group’s drug must enter the clinical phase before she announces her findings."
I saw no trace of remorse on his face—only mockery, certainty of success, and a sense of vengeance fulfilled.
It was as if he’d been waiting for this day all along.
Someone had tampered with my computer and altered the experiment data. I’d had my suspicions, but I couldn’t bear to believe it was Lin Yuchuan.
It felt like a tire had run over my chest; the pain was unbearable.
I’d always thought Lin Yuchuan was here to save me.
I’d struggled for a long time, even deciding to give up my long-held principles to be with him.
The day I agreed to be his girlfriend, he’d been as happy as a child.
For three years, he’d been like a thoughtful homemaker, coming home early every day to wash clothes, cook, and mop the floor.
It was the warmth of a home I hadn’t felt in ages.
A month ago, he said that once my research was over, he wanted to hurry and make me his wife.
I’d said yes.
I’d thought we’d spend the rest of our lives like that.
Never did I imagine it was all just because I was the person in charge of the new drug research.
So those more than a thousand days and nights of intimate companionship had all been nothing but feigned affection.
